BIOGAS
India:
Only 45% of rural households use electricity
80 million households (approx. 400 million people) do not have access to electricity and uses kerosene for lighting
The need to provide rural India with a viable and sustainable source of fuel has been very urgent. India's energy demand is increasing, and its inability to step up production to meet demand, has increased India's reliance on costly imports. The demand for energy is projected to grow at an annual rate of 4.6% - one of the highest in the world.
Solution: Biogas - derived principally from agricultural residues and dung from India's 300 million cattle. The gas is useful as a fuel substitute for firewood, petrol, and diesel. 4 million mini home-use biogas plants were installed (costs just USD 150 per plant).
